Chief Information Officer, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
Born in Stafford, England, and raised in Fairfax, Virginia, I'm a diehard Washington, D.C. sports fan. After graduating from Virginia Tech, I worked at KPMG in their commercial advisory services practice helping clients manage risk in their information technology (IT) programs.
As my career progressed, I started my next chapter at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), where I had the opportunity to take on multiple roles, including serving as the chief information security officer. Last year I was promoted to be the chief information officer where I led the commission’s IT organization, ensuring effective delivery of IT services to our customers.
The work project/initiative I'm most excited about...
We are underway in an application modernization initiative which will allow our employees and the public to have access to best-in-breed technologies for a better user experience, allow for more efficient business processes, and better support FERC's regulatory responsibilities.
How Virginia Tech equipped me for the "real world"...
Pamplin not only taught the "tech stuff," but really helped me prepare to be a strong leader. Working in groups with a diverse set of experiences, effective communication, and handling conflict are key soft skills a leader uses on a daily basis.
I stay connected with fellow Hokies by...
Various Virginia Tech chapter and professional networking events.
Word of encouragement to a current Virginia Tech student...
Dream big, set goals, and have fun!
Board work or community involvement I'm most excited about...
Volunteering to coach youth soccer teams. I grew up playing the sport and really enjoy working with kids and seeing them excel over the course of the season.
I predict the future of my field...
Constant and always changing. The key is to adapt and learn to stay current.
Best advice I've gotten...
It's ok to fail. Making mistakes and learning from them is how to develop into a strong leader.
A key habit or practice of mine that's worth the effort...
Writing down goals daily on what I want to accomplish and checking them off as they are complete. It gives me a sense of accomplishment and what value I added for the day.
My advice for someone wanting to enter my industry...
Go in eyes wide open as the field of technology is broad. See what you enjoy, take the time to learn about it, take the time to talk with professionals that align to your interests, and set a goal on how you want to grow your career in the particular discipline.
A cause I'm most passionate about...
Mentoring the next generation of technology leaders. As I had a mentor that helped shape my career, it is important that I give back and support the next generation of leaders.
Favorite Virginia Tech memory...
I met so many new friends that have been long lasting relationships.
Best part of being a Virginia Tech alum...
With such a big alumni base in the Washington, D.C. metro area, I can always reach out to fellow Hokies when trying to solve a challenge my organization is faced with. We also help out our fellow Hokies, and I can't tell you how many times individuals have gone above and beyond to help.
